The Unknown Face

It’s not often that I drop my critical focus and get sucked into a digital experience while I’m writing a post. But this site is so powerful and well done that I got lost in it for a while. It’s a French website designed for the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. it features an algorithm designed image that combines thousands of faces of soldiers killed in the war and combines them into one. It’s quite powerful. But more powerful still is the stories of individuals found inside the site. Seeing their pictures and realizing how young they were and the sacrifices they made is really powerful. The scrolling navigation through the photos is pretty unusual and a nice touch. The haunting music provides a somber mood. Very well done and powerful.
